What if you add a Digital Elevation Model to QGIS and you want to shade it according to Elevation?

By Default the DEM will be a gray shaded layer where the lightest parts of the DEM are the highest and the darker ones are lower.

On the properties for your DEM layer you can set the Symbology to Singleband Pseudocolor and pick a color ramp. In this case I picked Spectral where red represents a lower elevation and green represents a higher elevation.

and you’ll have this once it’s applied:

What if you wanted to create your own Color Ramp? Click the down arrow on your color ramp (on the right of the color ramp) and select Create new Color Ramp and Create it with a Gradient.

The above Color ramp was created with a Gradient and stretches between red and green. Your new one will be some variation of one color. Mine being light green to dark green.

You’ll see the Green Color Ramp above and see two small Stops at either end. Click on one stop and set a color. Click on the other and set a color. I’m going to go from a light blue to a pink.

Once I click apply I have:

The cartography tools in QGIS are pretty amazing once you sit down and start experimenting. Play. Learn.
