When I started this online class I had 2 thoughts:

  • Could I do it?
  • Could I keep it updated?

So the answer to the first question is yes and discovering how to take an 8 hour class and turn it into a written document was a bit much. It proved to me I’ll never write a book.

Can I keep it up to date? That one has been a bit trickier. I’ve been teaching the class live and discovered one thing stopped working. I tried as much as possible to mimic my work and there are quite a few online services I use – One of which is NAIP.

For the short story the NAIP service that I used to highlight the ArcGIS Services portion shut down and changed over to WMS. Which is nice because you get 3 products of NAIP: Color, CIR, and NDVI. So I updated the course material to reflect that and as of this blog article GUES WHAT ISN’T WORKING:

So I ended up downloading some NAIP to include in the data download which greatly increased the size BUT takes care of things I have no control over: other people’s servers. On the one hand it’s also a good learning experience as things don’t work out as you would wish BUT it also makes (in my opinion) a worse experience.

Anyway – stay tuned for more updates to the Intro to QGIS 3.44 class.
